Enjoy story telling, poetry readings, and music on the shores of Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes. Resident beach bards and visitors recite stories by heart in a campfire circle setting. Children’s hour begins at 8:30 p.m. followed by the adults at 10:00 p.m. The public is welcome and $1 donations are accepted. Only hard rain stops the beach bards! Leelanau School Fire Circle.

Jeremy Kittel and his band are national award-winning performers of Scottish, Irish, Jazz and American music. Jeremy Kittel performs at festivals & concerts across the country, including the Kennedy Center, Prairie Home Companion, Detroit Int’l Jazz Fest & Milwaukee Irish Fest. Bring chairs, blankets and everyone you know to the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb. If rain, the concert will be held at the Glen Arbor Town Hall.

July 14, 8 pm – Manitou Music Festival: Sister Wilene
Sister Wilene, named for Wilene Forrester, the only female member of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys gives a nod to the country/bluegrass/Americana tradition with songs that will take you back to the days when country music was a pocketful of heartfelt ballads and great swing tunes, from Patsy Cline to Bob Wills; from honky-tonks to dance halls to front porches. July 18, 8 pm – Manitou Music Festival:Still on the Hill
Kelly Mulhollan and Donna Stjerna are Still on the Hill, and they come to Glen Arbor direct from the Ozarks! They play a variety of instruments including acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and harmonica. Their repertoire consists of original, roots-based compositions they term “folkgrass”, interspersed with new arrangements of traditional songs. Concert will be held at the Glen Arbor – Studio Stage/Lake Street Studios. If rain, concert will be held at the Glen Arbor Township Hall.

July 20, 7 pm – Cedar River Kayaking
Bring your own kayak or canoe plus PFD and join in the fun. We’ll paddle from the Cedar River Launch downriver toward Lake Leelanau. It takes an hour to get to the lake for good paddlers, but we are more relaxed and usually turn around whenever folks are ready. Refreshments following. July 21, 8 pm – Manitou Music Festival Concert: Claudia Schmidt
Claudia Schmidt has been perfecting her craft for almost four decades. It’s a quirky and wonderful hodge-podge of music, poetry, story, laughter, drama, and celebrating the moment. Her performances include original work along with very personal versions of the work of others; what you get is a unique look at the world from someone who says what she sees with clarity, humor, and wonder. Garrison Keillor has said “when Claudia sings a song, it stays sung”. Concert will be held at the Glen Arbor – Studio Stage/Lake Street Studios. July 23 – 28, 5 to 8 pm and 10 am to 5 pm – 18th Annual Art Leelanau
The Leelanau Community Cultural Center’s 18th annual “Art Leelanau: benefit and art exhibition will be held Friday, July 23 at the Old Art Building in Leland. The opening night gala will feature live music by the John Lindenau Quartet, art by 100 Leelanau artists, and delicious hors-d’oeuvres.

July 23 & 24, 9 am to 4 pm – PHSB Historic Preservation Volunteer Project
Join us for one or two days of preserving historic structures in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Volunteers can hammer-swing or assist in other tasks to save buildings at the beloved Treat Farm. To register go to http://www.phsb.org and indicate Treat Farm. July 24, 6 pm – Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear Picnic
Join us in the barn at the Tweddle Farm for our annual picnic potluck. Please bring a dish to pass and your friends! We will also be having a work project that day at the Treat farm down the road if you care to join us for that as well. Drinks, hot dogs and dinner ware provided. Learn about Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear and meet others interested in saving the historic structures in the Park. To get there, take M-22 S out of Empire a mile then R on Stormer road.

July 25, 8 pm – Manitou Music Festival: Mulebone
Mulebone is the duo of multi-instrumentalist, John Ragusa and roots music specialist, Hugh Pool. Their musical home is the traditional blues; sometimes they play it straight ahead, while at other moments they float above it, viewing and interpreting from a distant vantage point. John plays conch shell, Jews harp, cornet, all manner of flutes, and tin whistle. Hugh plays slide guitar boogies, one chord riffs a la Howlin’ Wolf and blues of all shapes and colors. Concert will be held at the Glen Arbor – Studio Stage/Lake Street Studios. If rain, concert will be held at the Glen Arbor Township Hall.

July 27, 9 am – Glen Arbor Women’s Club 4th Annual Running Bear 5k Run/Walk & 1/2 Mile Kid’s Run: Join The Glen Arbor Women’s Club for the 4th Annual Running Bear 5K Run/Walk & 1/2 Mile Kids’Run. Registration: 7:30- 8:45a.m. 5K Run/Walk: 9:00a.m. 1/2 Mile Kids’Run: 9:05a.m. Prizes are awarded for Overall Best Male & Female and 1st & 2nd place in 9 age categories. An After Race Celebration will have lots of food and a prize drawing for over 40 prizes. The 1/2 Mile Kids’ Run will have participants receiving a ribbon and coupons from Campfire Pottery, Riverside Pizza Ice Cream, and The River Miniature Golf. Cost for the 5K is $12 ($15, the day of Run) and $5 for the Kids’ Run. T-shirts are available the day of the Run at $15 and $12. Join us for a day of fun for the whole family!!

July 29, 7 pm – Manitou Music Festival: Western Brass Quintet
Ride the chairlift to the top of the ski hill at The Hometead Resort for an amazing concert and setting! The Western Brass Quintet, an ensemble in residence at Western Michigan University, has entertained national and international audiences with cutting-edge, virtuosic repertoire and performs with some of the finest musicians in the world. Starting at 6:00, audience members will be given chairlift or golf cart rides to the top of the hill. The concert begins at 7:00. Tickets for this concert are $15 ($13 for GAAA members). The Homestead can not allow concert guests to bring personal food, drinks, bags or backpacks. A variety of snacks, soft drinks, wine, and beer will be available for purchase at the concert. Chairs will be provided, but concert goers are welcome to bring blankets for grass seating. Children are not free for this Glen Arbor Art Association fundraising event. In the event of rain, the concert and auction will be at the Mountain Flowers Meeting Center at The Homestead.

July 29 through Aug. 3 – Traverse City Film Festival

July 31, 9 am to 3 pm – Path to Page: A day of writing and hiking
For beginning and experienced writers, this program combines a beautiful three mile walk through historic Port Oneida, with writing instruction. Exploring the scenic paths and farms, Anne-Marie Oomen, Creative Writing instructor at Interlochen Arts Academy, provides the inspiration and writing tools for creating your own imaginative pieces based upon facts about select historic sites. The group will have time to write, and share snippets of their work as the day progresses. Cost is: $70 and includes a box lunch. To register go to www.phsb.org. Come join us in Northport for a special Music in the Park appearance by the New Third Coast. Celebrate the start of the weekend and enjoy some great music along with a beautiful view of the bay from Northport’s Marina Park. Bring your chairs or blankets and a picnic and make an evening of it.

Aug 22, 5 pm to 10 pm – Traverse City Wine and Art Festival
The 2009 Benefit Party will lay the foundation for the 2010 Traverse City Wine & Art Festival, a landmark celebration of the wine, food and culture of our region. It will feature 20 wineries from the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas and a selection of Traverse City and Leelanau restaurants providing food & desserts. Art Center Traverse City will be coordinating a sampling of artists and arts organizations who will display and sell their work in booths ringing the tent. Music will be offered for the duration, headlined by Michigan’s own Thom Jayne and the Nomads who play a truly unique blend of world and Celtic infused jazz. The music will be punctuated by original dance from the Michigan Dance Collective.

Aug 22, 8 pm – Cherry Capital Chorus & Four Man Fishing Tackle Quartet
Northport Public School
It has been three years since the Cherry Capital Chorus and Four Man Fishing Tackle Quartet have been on our stage. When either group walks on a stage, the fun begins. Their close harmony barbershop singing is at the top of the genre of music making. It’s been almost 40 years since 12 men gathered at the Park Place Hotel in Traverse City for the first meeting of the Cherry Capital Chorus. They are part of an international Barbershop Harmony Society that boasts over 30,000 members. Many of the members have no formal music training, but they all take their singing seriously and have fun doing it. The Four Man Fishing Tackle Quartet has a unique sound and, when you add their brand of up north fishermen’s humor, it doesn’t get any better than that. This very popular quartet is in great demand so we feel fortunate to have them on our stage. This concert will put a smile on your face from the first note. Come and enjoy.

Aug 26, 5 pm to 6 pm – Northwest Michigan Shipwrecks & Maritime History
Jed Jaworksi of the Michigan Maritime Museum presents “Northwest Michigan Shipwrecks and Maritime History”. This presentation is a part of the 2009 Lecture Series of the Leelanau Historical Society on Wednesdays through 8/26. This presentation begins at 5 pm in the Munnecke Room at the Leelanau Historical Museum/Leland Library in Leland. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Aug 30 – Cherry-Roubaix Bike Race
Following the Criterium the Cherry-Roubaix Road Race will be held on the same gear-shifting, lung-splitting, quad-burning 12-mile course used for Michigan State Road Race in the late 1980s. The start-finish line is high atop Sugar Loaf Resort, ensuring spectators a spectacular view of the race. Visit Cherry-Roubaix for more information.

Sept. 18, 8 pm – Dancing Wine
Three local wineries with six wines have been paired with original
choreography by the Michigan Dance Collective for a dance experience at the City Opera House. As you experience the flavor of local wines in a traditional tasting environment, enjoy the visual element of art set in motion. The Michigan Dance Collective will perform an evening dance concert with choreography ranging from Jazz to Ballet to Modern.

Sept. 19, 2 pm to 6 pm – Glen Arbor BBQ & Brew Festival
BBQ & Brew Festival festures microbrews, ginger ale and root beer from Michigan brewers and soda makers. Microbrews will feature beer from heavy to light in taste which will appeal to all beer lovers.
The festival will include tastes from chicken barbeque cook-off featuring regional chefs competing for bragging rights on their special barbecue sauce or rub. Entertainment is provided by Reginald Harris and The White Sidewall Review with the Fabulous Curb Feelers. Formed in the 1970s, the band features oldies rock and roll music and Elvis music.

Sept. 19, All Day – Leland Heritage Celebration
The Leland Chamber will again facilitate the annual Leland Heritage Celebration. This consists of the Wood Boats on the Wall at the Museum, Fishtown Fest, Van’s Garage Classic Car Show, a Leland Historic Building art show at the Old Art Building, the Leelanau Conservancy on the Village Green, and more.

Sept. 19 – 9 am to 4 pm – Leland’s 2009 Classic Boat Show
As part of the Leland Heritage Celebration this classic boat show features ChrisCraft, Garwood, Lyman and other Vintage Watercraft from the 1930’s. This event is held behind the museum in Leland
While viewing the awesome vintage boats, enjoy live music on the lawn by Windy Ridge Boys (11:30-3:00). Donations welcome.
Also, peruse the exibit ‘Shipwrecks of the Manitou Passage’ Loss & Legacy inside the museum. Claudia Goudschaal and Fred Petroskey will also be on hand for a book signing.

Sept. 19 & 20 – Harvest Stompede
Annual Harvest Stompede Vineyard Run & Walk and Wine Tour. The weekend features a race through Leelanau’s vineyards and a wine tour of LPVA member wineries featuring wines, gourmet pastas and other culinary delights. Sept. 25, 9 am to 4 pm – Yoga/Painting/Meditation
This class will present three disciplines under one unifying format. Students will learn techniques to tap into their creative energy by using a combination of easy yoga practice and meditation techniques. After the “morning creative intention setting”, we’ll head out into the field for the rest of the day for guided sketching and painting exercises. Students will complete various assignments within sketchbooks and create plein air paintings in the medium of their choice. Each day will close with a discussion of the day’s progress. Margo Burian has been an illustrator since graduating from Kendall College of Art and Design with a BFA in 1992. She has exhibited paintings in galleries in northern Mighigan including Center Gallery in Glen Arbor. In 2007 Margo was one of the Glen Arbor Art Association’s artist in residence and one of her paintings was selected as the 2008 Manitou Music Festival posters. Every Friday and Saturday in October – Haunted Hayrides at Black Star Farms
Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay will be offering haunted hayrides every Friday and Saturday in October from 6pm-10pm. The cost is $10/per person leaving from the Hearth & Vine Cafe across from the Tasting Room. Pizzas, wine, hot cider will be available for purchase. It is guaranteed to be a scary good time!

Oct. 1, 10 am to 4 pm – Wonders of Watercolor Workshop with Charles Murphy
Watercolor is perhaps the most versatile medium(s) available to the visual artist. This workshop will explore a variety of applications and effects while building dynamic paintings using sound fundamentals. Compositional formats, pattern schemes, color mixing and glazing will all be covered. Numerous demonstrations will illustrate all principles discussed. Students will complete their own visual “glossary” for their future reference. Teaching painting has taken Charles across the US and around the world. Oct. 10 & 11, 9 am to 3 pm – Exploring Color with Duncan Sprattmoran
Hosted by the Glen Arbor Art Association.
Explore color using acrylic paints in a playful two day workshop focused on painters who want to use pigments they may not know. Four unique combinations of colors will be provided so you can explore interesting palettes and discover for yourself the possibilities inherent in quinacradone rose, indanthrene blue, bismuth vanadate yellow and others. In addition to color theory we will play with brush work and composition in order to let the hues sing. The class is ideal for painters who want to push into new territory and play. Since we will be working on four paintings during the two days, we are asking you to limit yourself to canvas or paper no more than 12×16. Bring your brushes, your palette, your water bucket, and play. Beginners welcome. Duncan Sprattmoran paints in watercolor and acrylic. He teaches at Pathfinder School and has taught at Northwestern Michigan College. He has won best of show at the Suttons Bay Art Fair, Algonac Art Fair, and Petoskey Art Fair. Duncan’s paintings are included in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, France, England, and Russia.
$150 members/$160 non-members (tuition fee includes paint)

In Perkins “Have Fun With It” talk, Ms. Perkins will speak about what she has learned about writing for children, and what she hopes to learn.
Lynne Rae Perkins was awarded the Newbery Medal for Criss Cross published in 2005 for children ages 10 and up. She is the author of one other book for teens—All Alone in the Universe, a companion to Criss Cross. Lynne Rae Perkins has also written and illustrated several picture books, including The Broken Cat; Snow Music, a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Book and a Book Sense Top Ten Pick; and Pictures from Our Vacation. This special evening kicks off the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association’s Taste the Passion weekend. The event will feature art and wine from Leelanau County paired with fabulous tapas by The Homestead’s Chef John Piombo. Love is in the air as you celebrate the upcoming Valentine’s Day at the “Taste the Passion” weekend February 6 & 7, 2010. This special weekend celebrates wine, chocolate and love in anticipation of Valentine’s Day! The combination of winter’s beauty in Leelanau with the special pleasures of life always makes for wonderful weekend.

The weekend starts on Saturday as participants head to their first winery stop to collect a souvenir glass. Then the fun begins with special pours and tasty chocolate treats offered at wineries between the hours of 11am and 5pm on Saturday, and Noon and 5pm on Sunday. However, because one cannot survive on chocolate alone (tempting as it may sound), savory dishes will be served at a number of tasting rooms.

The fourth program in the Talk About Art series will feature retired art history professor, Sada Omoto who will speak at the Glen Arbor Art Association. His talk is titled, “Regionalism Revisited” focusing on art, artists, and the culture of Northwest Lower Michigan. Since moving to Leland in 1997, he has concentrated on painting at the Old Art Building in Leland. His early background has made him sensitive to the diversity of art history traditions which has shaped his creativity as an artist in Northwest Lower Michigan. Sada Omoto’s talk will explore the question of how we identify and relate to the geography, the history, the countryside and the Big Lake, a constant reminder of this region. This uniqueness cries out to our artists to paint, sketch, document and preserve this wonderful Northwest Lower Michigan.

The melting of the winter snowpack provides an opportunity to travel back in time and investigate the melting of the great continental glaciers. Scientists have called Sleeping Bear Dunes, “The most complete record of glacial history preserved in the National Park Service.” Let the sands, rocks, and topography reveal the very foundation of the Lakeshore.

April 14, 7 pm – Insight and Inspiration Speaker Series – Meggan Watt
“Finding Peace in a Nuclear World” at the Leland Public School Performing  as the final speaker for the 2009/2010 Season of the Insight and Inspiration Speaker Series sponsored by the Leland Educational Foundation. Join Meggen Watt as she reveals her journey of preventing the spread of nuclear weapons- as a negotiator, advisor, and most recently as U.S. Coordinator for the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism at the United States Department of State. Meggen will share her story; how her studies abroad and one particular class at the Monterey Institute of International Studies sparked her interest in nuclear non-proliferation, how that would lead her to a career in pursuit of peace, to the negotiating table with the Russians and to become an expert in this field. The series is open to individuals 12 years and older and will begin with a 6:30 pm reception and followed by a short Q & A. Individual tickets are available for $10.00 at the door or in advance from the Leland Public School office. April 29, 7:30 pm – Talk About Art with Pam Yee, Altered Books
Pam will talk about altered books, which are usually created from discarded hardbound books that have been saved from the landfill and recreated to become coffee table books. Yee’s talk will also touch on her own handmade books and she will bring samples of both. Pam Yee is a mixed media artist who began making cards for family and friends. She has worked in fibers (knitting), wood (jewelry, books, furniture & mobile), paper (books & cards), plexiglas (books), and leather and metal (books & jewelry). Pam is an avid recycler and uses discarded objects in her altered books along with all manner of mixed media. Inks, paint, rubber stamps, paint palettes, fibers, photos, images from magazines, new and old newspapers, cardstocks and anything that isn’t mailed down may be used in her altered books. She also makes hand bound books from simple folded books of paper to Coptic stitched books with leather, wood, metal, clay, and Plexiglas covers.
The talks are free and open to the public.

May 29, 7:05 pm – Memorial Day Remembrance: FANtastics Fireworks Night
The Traverse City Beach Bums are starting the 2010 season with a BANG! with back to back fireworks nights. Join in to help remember the US heros who gave all for their country. Saturday nights at Wuerfel Park offer fans the opportunity to support a great charity as well as pick up special auction items. The Beach Bums players and coaches will be playing in special camo uniforms for this special Saturday contest. Uniforms will be auctioned at the end of the game with proceeds going to support the Grand Traverse and Leelanau County Military Assistance Fund. Gates open at 5:00 PM.

May 30, 5:06 pm – Family Funday Sunday at Wuerfel Park
Kids, 12-years and younger, receive 1/2 off their ticket with one full price adult chairback seat. Please check back for more information. Gates open at 3:00 PM.
• Kids, 5 thru 12 years of age, are invited to run the bases after the game, (children must be able to go out on the field without their parents).
• The entire Beach Bums baseball team will be available to sign autographs after the game in front of the clubhouse.

June 17, 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm – Kerri VandenBerg: Watercolorist
Artist in Residence presentation. Kerri VandenBerg is an emerging artist who lives and works in Eugene, Oregon. She is employed full-time as a bike mechanic. She grew up in Grand Rapids, fell in love with Leelanau while in high school, and will focus on familiar and unfamiliar places on the peninsula. She is especially interested in exploring visual conditions under moonlight and during late afternoon. The program is free.

June 19, 6 pm to 9 pm – LPVA Small Plates
Our new “LPVA Small Plates” event  will feature seven of our member wineries offering a full glass of wine paired with a well-presented and substantial tapas dish. Learn barn preservation skills while helping to preserve the Baker Sheep Barn in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District. Co-sponsored by PHSB, participants can attend on any day. June 25, 9 am to 4 pm – PHSB – Historic Field Clearing Volunteer Project
Help preserve the historic landscapes of the Port Oneida Rural Historic District by removing non-native and invasive black locust trees that keep native plants and trees from growing. Field clearing also prevents reforestation around the farms. This year’s project is at the Ole Oleson farm. Wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Bring a sack lunch. In Maple City – Take M-22 to Basch rd- turn left; right on Kelderhouse rd.

June 25, 8:30 pm – Beach Bards
Enjoy story telling, poetry readings, and music on the shores of Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes. Resident beach bards and visitors recite stories by heart in a campfire circle setting. Children’s hour begins at 8:30 p.m. followed by the adults at 10:00 p.m. The public is welcome and $1 donations are accepted. Only hard rain stops the beach bards! Leelanau School Fire Circle.

June 26, 7 pm – Here Comes Summer/Three Men and a Tenor
The Glen Arbor Art Association invites you to a benefit concert at Thoreson Farm, in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, featuring Michigan’s own, THREE MEN and a TENOR.  Come celebrate the arrival of summer with a special evening of delightful music, delicious food, artists’ demonstrations, and a Family Fun Silent Auction that includes great packages for families. Pre-ordered box suppers by Cherry Republic will be served at 6:00 p.m. The concert starts at 7:00 p.m. – concert pre-orders strongly recommended. Price for the concert with a box supper and beverage is $30 for adults; $20.00 for concert-only. Concert and box supper for children 12 and under is $15.00 and concert-only for children12 and under is $10.00. There is no concert charge for children under 3. Order box suppers before June 22.
